2022 Winter Conference Contests

Contests

Students and teachers should carefully note the requirements and supplies listed for each of the contests. All live contests will begin at 9 a.m. Central time on Friday, February 25. Teachers who register students will receive Zoom links for the contest rooms. All uploaded entries must contain metadata in the description field based on instructions found at www.atpi.org/submission. Read the rules for each contest carefully. Entry fee: $8 for individual contest and $20 for teams, except where noted.


A200 – Advanced portfolio review/contest – Art
J200 – Advanced portfolio review/contest – PJ
This personal critique for juniors or seniors is an excellent warm-up for the Hal Fulgham Memorial Scholarship contest. Students will receive critiques through the online contest system. Students may only sign up for one critique. $8 entry fee Materials: upload 5 to 10 images to the ATPI contest site by 6 p.m. on Tuesday, February 22.

R100 – Beginning portfolio review/contest
For those students who are just getting started and looking to further hone their photography skills, this portfolio review will offer an opportunity for beginners to have their work critiqued by photo and journalism instructors from around the state. Students will receive critiques through the online contest system. $8 entry fee Materials: no more than 5 images uploaded to the ATPI contest site by 6 p.m. on Tuesday, February 22.


N101 – ATPI Digital Editing Contest (live)
Students will be given a series of scanned images and a period of time in which to use image editing software to create a contest entry. The emphasis of this contest is to see how creative the students can be. Students must provide their own laptop with a version of Adobe Photoshop or other image editing software. Schools may register as many students as they wish for this contest.This contest will be Friday from 9 to 11 a.m. Materials: laptop with image editing software

N102 – ATPI Picture Package Contest (upload entries prior to convention)
This contest is an individual competition, but schools may register as many students as they want. Students will receive an assignment for their photographs on Thursday, February 17 at 9 a.m. on the ATPI website, Facebook and Twitter accounts. Students will have until 6 p.m. Tuesday, February 22, to assemble and submit three images to contest.atpi.org that best captures the assignment. Materials: digital camera, any special equipment
The themes announced via Twitter Thursday morning are “Ambition,” “Warped,” or “Plastic Age.” Students should select one theme.

N103 – ATPI Digital Image Contest (live)
The contest will provide students with a list of categories and 90 minutes to photograph. Students will need to access to a computer to select images and add the metadata. No manipulation of the images is allowed. Schools may register as many students as they wish for this contest. This contest is on Friday, beginning at 9 a.m. Materials: digital camera, card reader or cables to connect the camera to a computer for downloading, any special equipment, laptop (optional)

ATPI News Video Contest (live)
N107 – Team 1
N108 – Team 2
N109 – Team 3
Students will be provided a theme for the video on Friday at 9 a.m. and will have about 24 hours to complete the assignment. Teams may consist of one to three students. Students will have overnight to complete their videos. Students must post the video online and share the URL with ATPI by 10 a.m. on Saturday. Entry fee is $20 for each team. Materials: digital video camera, editing laptop with your software.

ATPI Artistic Video Contest (live)
N110 – Team 1
N111 – Team 2
N112 – Team 3
Students will be provided a theme for the video on Friday at 9 a.m. and will have about 24 hours to complete the assignment. Teams may consist of one to three students. N113 – ATPI Cropped Contest (pre-conference and live)
Schools are limited to three student entrants. Judges will give students an assignment, a required element and a specific amount of time to capture one image. The rules required that the first image be submitted to ATPI’s online contest site by February 22. After a quick critique from the judges, some of the students will be cropped from the group and judges will give the remaining students the next assignment. The contest will start Friday at 9 a.m. Materials: digital camera
The theme announced via Twitter Thursday morning for round 1 is “Time.” Upload your entry by 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb 22.

ATPI School Portfolio Contest (upload entries prior to convention)
N114 – Team 1
N115 – Team 2
N116 – Team 3
A team of four students will compete in this contest. The school must have four students on the team. Students will receive a list of potential themes on Thursday, February 17 at 9 a.m. The list will be posted on Twitter, Facebook and the ATPI Website. Students will have until 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb 22 to submit entries at contest.atpi.org. Each student will contribute one image, which must be taken during time period between receiving the list of themes and the deadline. Upload all four images under the teacher’s name on the contest entry site but ensure that each student’s name is in the metadata. Entry fee is $20 for the team. If you have more than three teams to register, please email info@atpi.org to add additional team numbers. Materials: digital cameras
The themes announced via Twitter Thursday morning are “Progress,” “Light,” or “Human Nature.” All four students on the team should build the portfolio around one of these themes. Upload under the teacher’s name by 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb 22.

N400 – Faculty Digital Contest (live)
All faculty members will be registered into this contest. There is no entry fee. Teachers will be given several categories to select from. Images must be uploaded to the ATPI contest site by 11:30 a.m. on Friday. Materials: digital camera

Environmental Self-Portrait Contest (upload entries prior to convention)
This is a pre-conference contest for students and teachers. Entries are due by 6 p.m. on Tuesday, February 22. There is a 50-cent entry fee per image for ATPI members and $1 per entry for non-members. See full rules at www.atpi.org/selfportrait. Upload entries to contest.atpi.org.

“The B.I.G 72” Video Contest (pre-conference)
Get ready for a rollercoaster of challenges as you compete for bragging rights as the best on-the-spot program. Schools will be given a topic, via ATPI’s Twitter feed, on Thursday, February 17 at 9 a.m. CST. Students and instructors will work together with the given theme within a 72-hour time frame. Teams will post their entries online by Sunday at midnight and submit the URL to ATPI. Total running time must not exceed three minutes. A thematic element will be given at the start of the contest which MUST be incorporated within the entry. List N500 under the teacher’s name on the registration form to enter. Entry fee is $20 for the team.
