RULES:
Original Work - All photographs submitted must be the original work of a Texas High School Student.
Size - All photographs submitted must range from a minimum image area size of 6 x 6 cm to a maximum size of 11 x 14 inches. Exceptions will be made for Polaroid transfers, which may be of any size up to 11 x 14 inches.
Mounts - All prints must be mounted on 11 x 14 inch black or white mount board. Please do not sign or write your name or school name on the front of the mount board or any over mat boards.If these requirements are not met, prints will be automatically disqualified.
Entry Blank - Each print submitted must have an official entry blank attached to the top center of the print. (The prints will be judged according to the placement of the label.) The entry blank must be completely filled out and signed. Labels not completely filled out will be placed in the Open Advanced category. Make sure you complete your entry form!
Divisions - Black and white and color prints will be accepted in two divisions: Beginning (1st year photo students) and Advanced (more than one year experience). Color prints may be printed by a commercial printer without manipulation. Any and all manipulation must be done by the student. All hand colored prints must be entered in the hand colored category! All Polaroid transfers should be entered into the Polaroid transfer category!
Deadline & Entry Fee - Entries will be accepted until Monday, March 24th, 2003 at 5:00 P.M. and must be accompanied by a $1.50 fee per print. Mail prints to: High School Photo Contest, Department of Public Communication, Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, TX 77341-2299. Checks should be made payable to SHSU Photo Society. Late entry begins at 5:00 P.M. Monday, March 24th and ends Thursday, March 27th at 5:00 P.M. Late entry fee is $2.00 per print. Any prints received after 5:00 P.M. on Monday must pay the late entry fee. Please make all accommodations to have your prints delivered on time. You may drop off prints any time between March 17th and the deadline on March 27th at the Dan Rather Communications Building Office located on the third floor. Mail in entries may be received anytime after March 17th.
Categories - Prints may be entered in one of thirteen categories of competition. Again, prints received without category designation will be placed in the Open category. If division placement is absent, the print will compete in the Advanced Division. Teachers should help students make this decision if necessary. The categories are marked on the entry blanks, which you may copy as needed.
Number of Prints - There is no limit to the number of prints that can be entered. Duplicate prints will not be accepted and will be eliminated from the contest. Portfolio work may be duplicated to compete in the single print competition.
Mailing & Return Post - Entries must be submitted in a sturdy reusable mailing box including a note card with total number of prints sent and the amount of return postage. Return postage will be accepted in the form of stamps or prepaid postage label. Prepaid FedEx or UPS labels are also acceptable. DO NOT include money or add postage onto your entry fee check. Any prints without return postage that are not picked up after the contest will be mailed back POSTAGE DUE via second class US mail. Prints will be available for pick up Friday, March 28th, after 1:00 P.M. Mailed prints will be in the mail by Saturday, March 29th. If you need to make special arrangements to pick up your prints please contact us before the contest begins.
Scholarship - The $1000 scholarship will be awarded to the Best of Show winner, and will be available for deposit upon registration as a full time student (12 or more hours) at Sam Houston State University the first semester of their freshman year. If the winner is not graduating in May of 2001, the funds will be held until their graduation if they plan to attend Sam Houston State University in the future.

ELIGIBILITY:
Prints may be entered by any Texas, public or private, school student enrolled in grades 9, 10, 11 or 12. Teachers must sign all entry blanks.

JUDGING:
Prejudging will begin on Wednesday, March 26th and continue through Thursday, March 27th. All work will be mailed back on Saturday, March 29th. Prints will be available for pickup on Friday, March 28th on the 2nd Floor of the Dan Rather Communications Building after 1:00 P.M.

AWARDS:
First and Second Place winners in each category will receive a ribbon and a certificate for their achievements. Third Place and Honorable Mention will receive a ribbon. Best of Show, Best of Beginning Division, and Best of Advanced Division will receive a ribbon and a certificate. Best of Show will be given the option to donate their print to the Photo Society Auction.

CATEGORIES:
To guide you in selecting the proper category for your print(s) we offer the following definitions: Hand Colored ­ everything colored by hand. They will not be split into B&W and Color.
Faces/Facades ­ translates human personality to film. Note: a facade doesn’t necessarily have to be a face.
Scapes ­ accurately depicts the design of a specific environment as a whole.
Natural Forms ­ photographic evaluation of nature’s design.
Life in Motion ­ photographic depiction that emphasizes the movements of life.
Commercial Product/Still Life ­ photographs created for the purpose of selling a product.
Urban Structures ­ emphasis on line, shape, and form of urban environment.
Experimental/Non-Silver ­ anything of experimental nature or non-silver process Ex: palladium; This category will not be split into B&W and Color.
Computer Based Images ­ manipulations or creations; Prints only! This category will not be split into B&W and Color.
Polaroid Transfers ­ This category will not be split into B&W and Color.
Special Assignment ­ “A Picture that Lies”. A picture that lies is defined as a photograph that captures something that does not exist in the real world. An example would be using perspective, slowed shutter speeds, etc.

SUMMARY FOR INSTRUCTORS:
Include entry fee ­ photos will be disqualified if fee is not included.
Include return postage in form of stamps, prepaid postage, or shipping label.
Mount boards must be 11 x 14 inches in size.
Mark Prints in BEGINNING or ADVANCED.
Please include a 3 x 5 note card indicating how many prints were sent, how many boxes were received, amount and type of postage (or if you are going to be picking up your prints after the competition).
