Pre-Conference Contests

Environmental Self Portrait Contest (upload)
This is a pre-conference contest for both students and teachers. Entries are due by 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 27 and should be uploaded to the ATPI contest site. The entry fee is 50¢ per entry for ATPI member schools and $1 for non-members. Images must have been created by the student or instructor in the photograph. This contest does not require registration for the conference in order to enter. More information can be found here.

“The B.I.G. 72” Video Contest (pre-conference)
List N500 as the contest under the teacher’s name on the registration form to register your school.
Get ready for a rollercoaster of challenges as you compete for bragging rights as the best on-the-spot program. Schools will be given a topic, via ATPI’s Twitter feed, on Thursday, Feb 22 at 9 p.m. CST. Students and instructors will work together with the given theme within a 72-hour time frame. Teams will upload their entries to a website of their choice that is publicly accessible by Sunday at midnight and share the URL using the ATPI Contest site. Total running time must not exceed three minutes. The video should not include copyrighted music. If royalty-free or Creative Commons music is utilized, properly annotate it in the credits. Include relevant production details in the credits, which do not count against the total running time. Entry fee is $25 for the team.

N101 – ATPI Picture Package Contest (upload entries prior to convention)
This contest is an individual competition, but schools may register as many students as they wish. Students will receive a choice of three themes for their photographs on Thursday, February 22 at 8 a.m. on the ATPI website, Facebook and Twitter accounts. Students will have until 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb 27, to assemble and submit three images to contest.atpi.org that best captures one theme. Students must register and attend the conference to participate in this contest. Entry fee is $10 per student. Materials: digital camera, any special equipment
Themes (choose one) – “Blue,” “Sweets,” or “Time”
Images must be created starting the day of the announcement. No prior work.

ATPI School Portfolio Contest (upload entries prior to convention)
N102 – Team 1
N103 – Team 2
N104 – Team 3
A team of four students will compete in this contest. The school must have four students on the team. Students will receive a list of themes on Thursday, Feb 22 at 8 a.m. The list will be posted on the ATPI website, Twitter and Facebook pages. Students will have until 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb 27 to submit entries at contest.atpi.org. Each student will contribute one image, which must be taken during time period between receiving the list of themes and the deadline. Upload all four images under the teacher’s name on the contest entry site but ensure that each student’s name is in the metadata. Entry fee is $25 for the team. Students must register and attend the conference to participate in this contest.Materials: digital cameras

N105 – ATPI Cropped Contest (pre-conference and on-site)
Schools are limited to three student entrants. Students will be given an assignment on Thursday, Feb 22 at 8 a.m. that they must upload to contest.atpi.org by 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb 27. These images will be critiqued beginning at 1:30 p.m. on Friday. From that group, students will be selected to move into the next round of the contest. In each round, students will have a specific amount of time (from 15-30 minutes depending on the round) to capture one image. After a quick critique from the judges, a portion of the students will be cropped from the group and the remaining students will be given the next assignment. Students must register and attend the conference to participate in this contest. Entry fee is $10 per student. Materials: digital camera
Theme – “movement”
Image must be created starting the day of the announcement. No prior work. Entry must be a single photo. Basic editing tools in Photoshop are allowed.

On-Site Contests

N106 – ATPI Digital Image Contest (on-site)
The contest will provide students with a list of categories and two hours to photograph on Friday. Students will need to bring a laptop to download images and select contest entries. No manipulation of the images in Photoshop or other software is allowed. Schools are limited to three contestants. This contest is on Friday, beginning at 11 a.m. until 1:15 p.m. Entries will be submitted through a form on the ATPI website. No action is required prior to the conference to be able to submit entries. Students must register and attend the conference to participate in this contest. Entry fee is $10 per student. Materials: laptop, digital camera, card reader or cables to connect the camera to a computer for downloading, any special equipment

N107 – ATPI Digital Editing Contest (on-site)
Students will be given a series of scanned images and a period of time in which to use image editing software to create a contest entry. The emphasis of this contest is to see how creative the students can be. Students must provide their own laptop with an image editing program. Each school may have no more than three students in the competition. Students must register and attend the conference to participate in this contest.This contest will be Friday from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Entry fee is $10 per student. Materials: laptop with image editing software

ATPI Photo Scavenger Hunt (on-site)
N108 – Team 1

N110 – Team 3
This contest will challenge the students’ power of observation. The team of one to three students will be provided a list of items to photograph and two hours to photograph with a single camera. No more than three students on a single team. The contest will start Friday morning at 11 a.m. By 1:15 p.m. the team must turn in a point tally sheet and the camera storage card, which will be returned on Friday night. Entry fee is $25 for each team. Students must register and attend the conference to participate in this contest. Materials: one digital camera

ATPI News Video Contest (on-site)
N111 – Team 1

N113 – Team 3
Students will be provided a theme for the video on Friday at 11 a.m. and will have about 23 hours to complete the assignment. Teams may consist of one to three students. Students will have overnight to complete their videos. Teams will upload their entries to a website of their choice that is publicly accessible by 10 a.m. on Saturday and share the URL using the ATPI Contest site. Entry fee is $25 for each team. Students must register and attend the conference to participate in this contest. Materials: digital video camera, editing laptop with your software.

ATPI Artistic Video Contest (on-site)
N114 – Team 1
N115 – Team 2
N116 – Team 3
Students will be provided a theme for the video on Friday at 11 a.m. and will have about 23 hours to complete the assignment. Teams may consist of one to three students. Teams will upload their entries to a website of their choice that is publicly accessible by 10 a.m. on Saturday and share the URL using the ATPI Contest site. Entry fee is $25 for each team. Students must register and attend the conference to participate in this contest. Materials: digital video camera, editing laptop with your software.

N400 – Faculty Digital Contest (on-site)
All faculty members will be registered into this contest. There is no entry fee, but teachers must bring their own digital camera. Teachers will be given several categories to select from. Images must be downloaded from the digital cameras by 10 a.m. on Saturday. Entries will be submitted through a form on the ATPI website. No action is required prior to the conference to be able to submit entries. Materials: digital camera

Portfolio Reviews/Contest


A200 – Advanced portfolio review/contest – Art
J200 – Advanced portfolio review/contest – PJ
This personal critique for juniors or seniors is an excellent warm-up for the Hal Fulgham Memorial Scholarship contest. Students will be critiqued on Saturday morning. Students may only sign up for one critique. Entry fee is $10 per student. Materials: upload 5 to 10 images to the ATPI contest site by 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb 27.

R100 – Beginning portfolio review/contest

For those students who are just getting started and looking to further hone their photography skills, this portfolio review will offer an opportunity for beginners to have their work critiqued by photo and journalism instructors from around the state. Beginning portfolio reviews are scheduled on Saturday morning. Entry fee is $10 per student. Materials: no more than 5 images uploaded to the ATPI contest site by 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb 27. If the student uploads more than five images, only the first five will be judged and critiqued.
