Summer Workshop

The ATPI Summer Workshop for Instructors Only has offered specialized instruction to over 800 teachers for more than 25 years. This three-and-a-half day workshop allows teachers to choose from one of several tracks, providing opportunities for improving personal skills and classroom activities. Teachers from all curriculum areas (art, journalism, industrial technology, vocational education) make new friends and learn from each other in a relaxed, fun atmosphere. The workshop will be held at Trimble Technical High School in Fort Worth, TX this year.

Playing with Light
with multiple instructors, led by Shannon Oden and Clint Smith
An advanced hands-on class focused on the art of creating and managing light sources. Participants will engage in an intensive lighting course that will expose them to the use of off camera flash both in the classroom and out, the use of modifiers, studio lighting techniques, remotes and triggers. Participants will also learn tabletop product photography lighting techniques, lighting ratios, high key and low key lighting. Participants will actively use their new knowledge and participate in a location and studio shoots designed to practice their newly learned skills.
Supplies needed: DSLR or mirrorless camera with manual controls, lenses instructors would use at their school with students, memory cards, and tripod. Shoe mount flashes used at school and laptops are optional.

Photo Teaching Bootcamp
with Jeff Grimm and John Knaur
Designed for the teacher who wants to improve their teaching skills, this class will combine academic and practical exercises from camera handling to composition and computer workflow to storytelling. Teachers will explore assignment ideas and then practice what they’ve learned by completing the assignments. Teachers will leave the class with ideas to give their students, along with practical examples to show what students can accomplish.
Supplies needed: DSLR or mirrorless camera, wide-tele zoom (your kit lens will work), 50mm f/1.8 if you have one, tripod, extra batteries and charger. Laptops are optional.

ReThinking Photography
with John Isaac and Ian McVea
An advanced class of hands-on shooting, thoughtful and constructive critique sessions and skillful post-processing tips for both the accomplished and amateur instructor. Participants will engage in a blend of photographic genres (art, commercial, documentary), learning the best craft tips from each area to create a portfolio of work by the end of the workshop.
Supplies needed: DSLR or mirrorless camera, extra lenses, tripod, extra batteries and charger, hard drive/flash drive to store photos.

Registration Fee Discount

As a special incentive to encourage some new people to join us, any teacher who has previously attended the ATPI Summer Workshop can bring one new person this year (someone who has never attended) and receive a $25 discount on both registrations – pay only $250/person. Both registrations should be mailed together to make it easier for us to keep track of them or include a note with each registration letting us know the two names that should be linked.
